Homeless and Travelers Aid Society (HATAS)
January 9, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm
DESCRIPTION: The HATAS Feed and Read (FaR) Program began February 2014 with 14 students. Today we’re helping 625 low-income students receive the nutrition they need to be successful in school. On a weekly basis, we pack bags filled with roughly 12lbs of food. Each bag also receives a gift card good for one gallon of milk at any Stewarts Shop. Once packed, the bags are delivered to fifteen area schools. At the school, each bag is paired with an age appropriate book. The student takes the food home with them on Friday afternoon. While our traditional school food programs ensure that children have food Monday-Friday, this program helps them avoid hunger on Saturday and Sunday.
This program positively impacts literacy, attendance, and classroom behavior. When children have consistent access to food (7 days a week) they are more active and engaged.
Participants will assemble and pack bags of food for City of Albany students participating in the Albany Backpack Food Program. Volunteers will pack approximately 625 bags. Each bag contains about 12lbs of food.
Sandwiches will be served about 6:00 p.m.
